Barmoor Castle Country Park
Barmoor Castle is a place of tranquility and escapism nestled in the heart of Northumberland. Our story and timeline showcase the transformation of this beloved park from a neglected estate into a stunning location. Here’s how it all unfolded:
History
1979: Hedley and Ann Lamb purchased Barmoor Castle, a derelict 12-acre estate, in need of care and love.
1990: The first area of the Park, ‘Cannon Lawn,’ was opened. It was named after Brig-General William Sitwell, who is believed to have brought back a cannon from Khartoum, which stood proudly on this spot. Cannon Lawn offers some of the best views on the park.
1991: The second phase of park development, ‘Palm Lawn,’ was introduced. It added 35 pitches and was named after the palm tree located in its center, believed to have been brought back from either Egypt or India by the Sitwells.
1999: The surrounding farm land, including the original west entrance, was purchased. The west entrance was excluded from the castle for nearly a century and no longer resembled a road.
2008: The woodland and nature walk, covering 1,600 meters and featuring over 10,000 planted trees, was completed.

2010: The West Entrance, commemorating The Earl of Surrey and the English Army’s camp at Barmoor on the 8th of September 1513 before the Battle of Flodden, was officially opened. The gates were designed and handcrafted by local blacksmith Steven Mather, showcasing details of pikes and swords from that historic battle.
2015: To mark the 25th anniversary of the park’s opening, two fountains were installed, one in the courtyard and one on Palm Lawn.
2018: Hedley Hall was opened on July 22, 2018, becoming a hub for park activities. It was named in honor of Hedley Lamb and designed by Berwick architect David Dobbson.
2021: The newest park area, ‘Back Croft,’ was officially opened, followed by Lake Wood in January 2022.
