Naval Warfare at Peasholm Park
Dates: From late May to September 1, 2024
Location: Peasholm Park, Scarborough
Experience the spectacle of Naval Warfare at Peasholm Park, Scarborough’s hidden gem. Located in North Bay, Peasholm Park offers a serene escape unless, of course, the battle commences on its picturesque lake.
During the summer season, witness a remarkable recreation of a sea battle as 20-foot replica boats engage in thrilling naval warfare. Surprisingly, these boats are primarily powered by manpower, a tradition that has endured for over 80 years.
Originally, the models included First World War battleships, mystery ships, a passenger liner, and a U-boat. After World War II, new vessels replicated the Battle of the River Plate, featuring British boats like HMS Ajax, Achilles, and Exeter, and the German battleship Graf Von Spee.
In the 1960s, aircraft were introduced, enhancing the excitement for audiences. The fleet expanded with ships like HMS Jervis Bay, British Pride, and even the Ark Royal.
While some smaller boats are now electrically powered, many are still maneuvered by Scarborough Borough Council employees. It’s often hailed as “the smallest manned navy in the world.”
The Battles, though less focused on specific wars, continue to thrill audiences with gunfire, smoke, and aerial bombings. Spectators flock to watch this captivating show, which typically begins around late May and runs until September 1st.
Don’t miss the chance to witness the unique Naval Warfare at Peasholm Park on a sunny summer afternoon. The shows occur on Saturdays in June, Thursdays and Saturdays in July, and Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout August.
