Things to See and Do
Cross-Shaped Keep: Marvel at the awe-inspiring keep as you explore the nearly intact circuit of towered walls at this remarkable medieval castle. Climb to the top for sweeping vistas over the River Coquet and the Northumberland countryside. The great tower or keep, built over 600 years ago by the first Earl of Northumberland, remains almost complete. Warkworth Castle played a pivotal role in the protracted war between England and Scotland, enduring a Scottish siege in 1327. Don’t forget to pick up a free audio tour for a deeper understanding of this captivating fortress.
The Percys: Keep an eye out for the lion badge etched throughout the castle; this emblem represents the mighty Percy family, who held immense power in the north. They were the proprietors of both Warkworth and the nearby Alnwick Castle, where their descendants reside to this day. The Percy family reached their zenith under Henry Percy, the first Earl of Northumberland. His son, ‘Harry Hotspur,’ famously portrayed by Shakespeare in Henry IV, Part I, led a rebellion against the king, resulting in the Percys briefly losing Warkworth Castle before it was eventually returned to them.
