You will enjoy the beauty of Looe Island Nature Reserve, a haven for wildlife managed with utmost care to preserve its natural charm. To ensure the island remains a special sanctuary, visits are exclusively allowed through official, organised trips, and any unauthorised access is strictly prohibited.
The island’s delicate ecosystem thrives on tranquillity, making it a refuge from the hustle and bustle of mainland life. Boats, jet skis, kayaks/canoes, paddleboards, snorkelers/divers, and swimmers are kindly requested to respect the no-landing sign, preserving the undisturbed habitat.
In consideration of the island’s appeal for tranquillity, the use of camera drones is deemed intrusive and unacceptable. Fishing during the two-hour visits is also prohibited to keep the natural balance of the ecosystem.
Board the boat at the floating pontoon near the RNLI lifeboat station slipway in East Looe. Operated by Looe Sea Safari, their office on the quayside ensures you find your way seamlessly.
Upon arrival, embark on a unique experience by climbing over the boat’s side onto a small landing trolley, taking care to navigate the waves. Limited assistance is available, and visitors are encouraged to contact us in advance if additional support is required.
Once on the island, a warden will greet you, offering a brief introduction to the nature reserve. Traverse the sandy beach and shingle up a simple sloping path to the Tractor Shed, where landing fees will be collected. Receive a trail guide, and commence your journey along the less-than-1km path, taking around 30 to 90 minutes to explore the island’s wildlife and scenery.
While the trail is manageable, some sections include steps and steep, uneven, and slippery terrain, necessitating appropriate footwear.
Respect the designated closed areas, often implemented to reduce wildlife disturbance or ensure safety. These may include the main house, cottages, and various outbuildings.
At the trail’s end, deposit guides in the container for cleaning and reuse. Looe Island Nature Reserve invites you to experience nature’s wonders responsibly and respectfully.
Looe Island is a sanctuary for nesting birds, including cormorants, shags, oystercatchers, and the majestic great black-backed gull, boasting Cornwall’s largest breeding colony. Nests, crafted by both partners, are made of twigs, grass, seaweed, and feathers, and are vulnerable to predation from carrion crows and rats. The island’s ringing project for great black-backed gulls, initiated in 2010, has ringed almost 700 birds, with sightings reported as far as north-west Spain.
Looe Island Nature Reserve invites you to explore its diverse ecosystems, learn about its inhabitants, and contribute to the conservation effort. Experience the tranquillity and richness of this unique sanctuary in harmony with nature. Visit us.
